Moving Checklist for Atlanta Apartment Renters 2026

Moving apartments in Atlanta is a different animal from moving anywhere else. Between the traffic, the freight elevator reservation systems, the parking permit requirements, and the lease-overlap windows that are either too long or too short, Atlanta apartment moves have their own set of complications that generic moving checklists never cover.

This checklist is built specifically for Atlanta renters — whether you're moving from Midtown to Buckhead, from a Decatur two-bedroom to a Norcross townhouse, or from your parents' place in Alpharetta to your first apartment near Georgia State. Work through it in order and your move day will go significantly smoother than it would otherwise.

8 Weeks Before Moving Day

  • Give your landlord written notice — Atlanta leases typically require 30–60 days notice; check your lease
  • Start collecting free boxes: liquor stores, Costco/Sam's Club, Buy Nothing groups, Facebook Marketplace (people constantly give away moving boxes)
  • Research moving companies early — peak season is May through August and companies book up fast
  • Start decluttering immediately — donate, sell on Marketplace, or toss anything you won't move
  • Request time off work for moving day and at least one day after for settling in

4 Weeks Before Moving Day

  • Book your moving company — in Atlanta, 2 weeks minimum lead time is recommended; for summer moves, 4+ weeks
  • Contact your new building's management about move-in procedures — many Atlanta apartment complexes require:
  • Freight elevator reservations (book early — they fill up on popular weekends)
  • Certificate of Insurance (COI) from your moving company — most Atlanta apartment buildings require this; Dadou can provide it
  • Parking permits or loading zone permissions
  • Confirm what time the loading dock or freight entrance is available
  • Begin packing non-essential items — off-season clothes, books, decor
  • Transfer or cancel utilities: Georgia Power, Atlanta Gas Light, Comcast/Xfinity, internet providers
  • Update your address: USPS mail forwarding, bank, employer, Georgia DDS (driver's license), voter registration

2 Weeks Before Moving Day

  • Confirm your moving company — get written confirmation with date, time, crew size, and vehicle
  • Confirm your COI has been submitted to the new building if required
  • Finish packing all rooms except essentials (bathroom, kitchen basics, one set of clothes)
  • Label every box clearly: room name + contents + fragile if needed
  • Photograph your current apartment — every wall, every appliance, every corner. This is your proof of condition for getting your deposit back
  • Contact your current building about move-out procedures and key return
  • Arrange childcare and/or pet care for moving day if needed

Moving Day Morning

  • Confirm your movers' arrival window via call or WhatsApp
  • Walk through the apartment one final time before movers arrive
  • Set aside boxes and bags you'll carry yourself — valuables, medications, important documents, laptop
  • Make sure parking is clear near the loading area; coordinate with your building if needed
  • Have cash or your payment method ready for the movers
  • Prop open doors to save time and prevent accidental door-lock situations

At the New Apartment

  • Do a walkthrough with your movers before they leave to confirm all items arrived in good condition
  • Photograph the new apartment before unpacking to document pre-existing damage
  • Check that utilities are active before movers leave (lights, water, heat/AC)
  • Test appliances if the unit came with them
  • Locate the nearest parking for family and friends helping you unpack
  • Tip your movers — in Atlanta, $20–$40 per mover is standard for a job well done

Within 1 Week After Moving

  • Submit your forwarding address with USPS if not done already
  • Return keys to your old building and request a move-out inspection
  • Document the return of keys in writing — email or text is fine
  • Set up internet and TV service if not already done — Comcast and AT&T are the main Atlanta providers and can take 5–7 days to schedule installation
  • Register your vehicle at your new county if you've moved to a new county (Georgia requires this within 30 days)

The One Thing Most Atlanta Renters Forget

The COI. Certificate of Insurance. Many Atlanta apartment buildings — especially newer complexes in Midtown, Buckhead, and Old Fourth Ward — require your moving company to provide a Certificate of Insurance before they allow any move to begin. Without it, the building can refuse to let the movers in, and you're stuck.

When you book Dadou Delivery & Moving, tell us your building's COI requirement and we'll handle it. We've moved clients into dozens of Atlanta apartment complexes and know exactly what's needed.

Dadou Delivery & Moving tip:

Atlanta apartment moves are almost always slower than people expect — elevators, parking, building rules, and traffic all add time. Book your movers for one hour earlier than you think you need. You can always let them go early; you can't get that hour back if the freight elevator is backed up.
